LA Highlights

This past weekend, a bunch of family members congregated in Los Angeles to celebrate my uncle’s 90th birthday. It was a great weekend celebrating family and togetherness. Here are the highlights:

The Hotel

My uncle lives in Culver City, a section in Los Angeles that is super hip, highly desirable, and walkable to everything and anything. We LOVE it there. Because there were so many of us, Cruzzie and I stayed in a hotel that was 0.5 miles away from my uncle house. It was uber hip and fun to stay at.

The downstairs was a restaurant that people ate at for all meals of the day — although I never ate there, I loved the vibe.

It was also a step away from the Culver Steps — a super hip area with Erewhon, other restaurants and stores, a movie theatre, etc…

The Proskurowski family — and the steps behind us.

Culver City is the heart of the movie industry — and here is the lion from the Wizard of Oz.

Family Time

Watching sports together.

Celebrating my uncle’s birthday at an incredible restaurant.

Having my bootie baby come from Ojai to LA to celebrate was a family highlight.

Ping Pong — a lot of Ping Pong.

Space Invaders

Love having an adventure to go on — so this was fun to find two different space invaders in to different parts of town.

The second one.

Random Open House Tour

When we were exploring and trying to locate the second space invader, we came across a house that had an open house. We thought it was a really nice looking house and wanted to see more. And hot damn, was it so cool and different. We had a great talk with the realtor (he was like a stand up comedian) and loved the multi-generational house lay out.

It was three different buildings — and all so different and unique.

This was the outside the lured us in. I thought it as one house — the wooden one, but it also included the silver one next door on the neighboring lot.

Totally unique and different.

Lots of outdoor spaces everywhere.

Walks and Runs

Three days in Los Angeles meant three runs, and lots of walks. This is one of my all time favorite runs along the canal.

I also did a trail run. Less fun but gorgeous views.

Three bald Dr. Proskurowskis.

Come back tomorrow to see my favorite food destinations we went to over the long weekend! Hope you are having a great start to your week!

Holbox + California Science Center

Apparently all I do is eat, but when in Los Angeles last week, every activity was planned around where we would eat. My (extremely cute) 90 year old uncle is so adventureous and doesn’t just sit at home — quite the contrary, he is out and about all the time, in touch with the best restaurants and exhibitions, etc….So he suggested going to the ONLY MEXICAN RESTAURANT with a MICHELIN STAR (Holbox) which was right next to the California Science Center — and we jumped on both.  We LOVE science museums (interactive, fun, interesting) and we love Mexican food — so win win win!

First of all, this cliche view never gets old. But I loved it on this particular night because you could see a sliver of the moon — nothing makes me happier than pretty skies.

Gjusta + Getty Villa

Ok, so going with my theory of always doing something cultural and eating something delicious, we had a great day at Gjusta Bakery and visiting the Getty Villa (different than the Getty Center!) in Los Angeles. These are not next to each other, but it was a quick drive from the bakery to the villa. And we wanted to do both (and recommend both, too!)

GJUSTA BAKERY

Gjusta is the sister restaurant of Gjelina (which is forever my favorite restaurant in LA, and also has the best cookbook and best sticky toffee pudding you will ever eat). It is located in Venice and everything in it is just beautiful and delicious.

New Favorite Tee: Unfortunate Portrait

My number one fashion love is jumpsuits, but a close second is t-shirts. YUP, simple, cotton, every-day tees. And so it makes me giddy that I just bought myself a new tee that is fun and unique. My new tee is The Air Barack from Unfortunate Portrait. There are a lot to choose from, but since my love for Obama runs deep, I decided on this one.

Air Barack. (Sigh. I miss Obama).

Pilates with Ashlee

Although I have never met IRL Ashlee Carignan, she is the new hot pilates teacher in LA. Strong, cool, motivated, interesting, and fun, we were put in touch when Ashlee agreed to participate in Natori Caftan Day (thanks Mary!). Always interested in health, wellness, fitness, and cool, I had the chance to interview sweetheart Ashlee, so take a look. Thanks so much, Ashlee, and I can’t wait to come to Los Angeles and take a class from you!
