Hurricane Sandy

As many of you know, a good part of the Northeast was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy from Monday into Tuesday.  Unlike last year, when Hurricane Irene turned out to be a lot milder than people were anticipating, Sandy caused some serious problems.  We were incredibly fortunate that we escaped without harm (and with power), but we were definitely in the minority.

You have probably seen the sheer destruction pictures on the internet. Here are some subtle pics from our neighborhood the morning after:

Park Avenue looking downtown. Usually you can't stand in the middle of the street and take a picture at 8 AM on a Tuesday.

Our local corner shop, Smiley's. Ken's family has lived in this neighborhood forever, and Smiley's stayed open through 9/11, Hurricanes Gloria and Irene, and the blackout. Not surprisingly, it was open.

A crane working on a high rise collapsed due to the strength of the wind. Miraculously, it didn't fall to the ground. Can't imagine what could have happened.

In retrospect, we are lucky other cranes, like this huge one a few blocks from our apartment, didn't meet the same fate.

Just a few weeks ago, the Saks windows were full of Josie Natori Ready-to-Wear, Lingerie, Couture, and Sleepwear. Due to Sandy, they were boarded up.

We are incredibly lucky, and many other families and neighborhoods weren’t.  Wishing everyone the best.

And due to the Hurricane, and the Natori office closure on Monday and Tuesday, all of the winners from last week’s giveaways will be announced on Friday. Until then…

  1. The pictures, especially from the Jersey Shore and Breezy Point, are horrific. Wishing everyone in the area a quick recovery.

  2. Thank you for sharing these pictures. I guess you braved the weather to go out and take the pictures. Everything looks so quiet and solemn. I send good wishes to all you are struggling without electricity, and having to find ways to get to work.

  3. Although I love the “Josie” product and respect the “Josie” vision, I cannot imagine who publishes this blog. “Subtle” pictures? Is this a joke? It may have been more respectful to write nothing and leave the pictures of empty, rainy NYC streets with a few fallen “branches” in one’s camera. Display a bit of compassion, please…….

    • While I can understand where your comments come from, please also understand the nature of the blog post. These pictures were taken immediately after Sandy hit, and before a lot of the devastation was revealed. This didn’t pretend to show anything more than what the neighborhood looked like immediately afterwards. If it came off as anything more than that, we apologize, but that was not the intention. We weren’t able to get anywhere else, and just published pictures of what we are able to.

Please note that we are donating 20% of our ecommerce sales to the Red Cross through next weekend to support relief efforts.

Thank you for your comments, and I am sorry you had such a negative reaction to the post.

  4. Its really spooky to see Saks boarded up – great shot. Glad your family is safe and sound.
