I am slightly obsessed with desserts. So much, that now I have to worry that I have borderline gestational diabetes (obviously, not awesome). I live to eat sweets — I have the biggest sweet tooth ever and feel that my meal is not finished unless I have a nibble of sugar. One of my favorite treats is a cookie from a bakery on the Upper West Side, Levain Bakery. The bakery is a true New York City establishment. Tucked away at the bottom of a brownstone building, the little tiny room barely holds more than 10 people either waiting in line or sitting on bar stools chowing on their cookies. Often times, there is a wait up the stairs to the sidewalk because the cookies are just that good. AND HELLS YEAH, they are that good.
They offer four cookie options — all of which are delicious. Chocolate Chip Walnut (my least favorite), Double Chocolate, Oatmeal Raisin, and Peanut Butter chocolate (my favorite). They are $4 per cookie but the cookie lasts several days — I have no idea what would happen if you consumed an entire cookie in one sitting…..The cookies are so moist and soft that they honestly melt in your mouth. SO good, I tell you. Levain also sells other products — coffee, bread, scones — but the cookies are where it is at and SHOULD NOT BE MISSED.
I like to buy a box of four (they tie it up with a pretty blue ribbon) — 2 Oatmeal Raisin and 2 Peanut Butter Chocolate. It takes our family about a week to eat 2 of them, and then I freeze the other two cookies, so I can have them whenever I want. When I want to eat the frozen cookies, I simply take them out and microwave them and they taste just like the fresh ones. (Yes, I hoard certain items in the house — wild blueberry jam, peanut butter, granola, toothpaste, Almond Milk, and Levain Cookies to name a few).
Even if you don’t live in NYC, you can buy them online here. Not a cheap cookie option because you have to pay for overnight shipping, but they are a great gift or package for yourself when you need to wallow your sorrows in chocolate (nothing wrong with that). Trust me, buy them and treat yourself to a scrumptious dessert.
Have a great weekend!
