Ken and I recently took a day trip to Portland for some shopping and dining. We were fortunate to have the grandparents to babysit, so we could wander around the city like we did pre-kids. It was heavenly. And our visit to Pok Pok, was one of the highlights. Pok Pok has been in all the food magazines and blogs, thanks to their Portland flagship and their NYC opening last year. Talk of the town! We love venturing to new, hip restaurants in New York, but the restaurant has so much buzz (and no reservations) that it is a little difficult to plan. So Portland Pok Pok was the perfect place (how many sea shells at the sea shore).
Pok Pok is located in South East Portland and in Red Hook (Brooklyn).
The restaurant is most known for the chicken wings. And although I don’t like chicken wings and have no interest in them, HOLY SHMOLY THESE WERE AHAMAZING. Like OMG, I couldn’t get enough. I would have eaten the entire order myself had I not been with Ken, who was also in love with the chicken wings.
The fresh, natural chicken wings are marinated in fish sauce and palm sugar, deep fried, tossed in caramalized fish sauce and garlic and served with vietnamese table salad. Out of this world delicious. Optional spice (I can’t deal with spice, so Ken got chili sauce on the side). Finger licking good.
Ken ordered curry with noodles. He found it delicious, although the chicken wings and my Pok Pok Papaya salad were the two winners of the evening.
The restaurant serves Southeast Asian food, specifically from the North and Northeast of Thailand. The menu changes seasonally, monthly or “at a whim.” They do not serve Pad Thai or Penang Curry and are more of a foodie’s take on local street food. They try to use local and natural products when possible (it is a restaurant in Portland, Oregon — the home of local and natural), but many Asian produce is not grown in local and organic farms.
If you live on either coast, Pok Pok is worth the wait and the travel time. Even just for a dozen chicken wings. To read more about Pok Pok, go here or here. Have a great weekend! We are en route to Norway for a wedding. Get excited for some Scandinavian flavor next week!
this reminds me of my sleepaway camp days!
