36 Hours

Every Sunday, The New York Times Travel section has a column titled “36 Hours” where they highlight all that you can do in a specific city for 36 hours. The popular column helps you create a a dream weekend with realistic and approachable itineraries — ideal for us OCD planners. The Times and book publisher Taschen came together to create a series of books with updated and new versions of the columns– a perfect gift for Father’s Day, an anniversary, a housewarming, or just a token to say I-love-you.

Not only are these books incredibly informative and practical, but they are also beautiful and special. Put them on your coffee table to stir up a conversation or place them on your nightstand to read before bed!

I bought three books from the series, USA Northeast, USA Westcoast, and 150 weekends in USA and Canada (which is the whole American/ Canadian series in one book. Ken would point out that buying all three of these is unnecessary.  OOPS!).

The books are stylishly written with bright photographs, restaurant and hotel details, museum highlights, quirky tidbits, and insightful information. Just think it is the more chic, sophisticated, adult version of Lonely Planet! The only draw back to these guides are that you will want to book a flight and trip IMMEDIATELY and will feel so bored and boring with your current life. BUY THESE BOOKS, if only to remind you that there is a life outside your city, house, and life. And you know that these books are becoming the hot present, as they now sell them at Anthropologie!

P.S. Check out the 36 hours in Eugene here and NYC here (my two homes).

  1. I love this column. I had no idea about the books. thanks for the heads up!

  2. one of my favorite columns in the sunday times. that and the wedding announcements!~

  3. Very neat. I’m pleasantly surprised by how well they did with Eugene! I like this column and it’s interesting to see how accurately they portray a place I know as a judge of whether to follow advice about a place I don’t know.

    • I KNOW!!! And the Eugene column is super old! They need to do a new one now!

  4. Based on being in Auckland, seems like good recs. Looking forward to seeing what else they have to say about other cities!

    • Of course I thought of you when the Auckland article came out and was going to send it to you, but it was post your trip! So glad they were accurate!
